Abia Police Confirm Abduction of Oil Dealer, Killing of Driver and Police Escort

The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Lawson Obasi, a prominent oil and gas dealer, and the killing of his driver and a police escort. The incident occurred on March 4, 2025, during an ambush by unidentified gunmen in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Command disclosed that it received a report from Sergeant Judge Gubi, who was part of the security detail assigned to Obasi. According to the report, ASP Tanko Natip, Inspector Ernest, and Sergeant Gubi, all from the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 6 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were escorting Obasi when the attack occurred.

The statement read in part: “At about 13:00 hours, while returning to Port Harcourt through Azumini Ndoki, Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia, they were ambushed at Mkap Jekere Ndoki around 19:00 hours by unidentified gunmen in a dark blue Sienna vehicle, who double-crossed them and opened fire.

“While the officers were repelling the attack, another set of gunmen forcefully took Chief Lawson, ordered them into their vehicle, and took him to an unknown destination, leaving his driver and one other person dead.”

The Abia State Police Command immediately deployed tactical teams to the scene, and the area is currently being combed to rescue the victim unharmed. The crime scene has been visited, and police operatives are conducting thorough searches.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, visited the area alongside the DC Operations and other teams. He urged residents to remain calm and security-conscious, assuring them that intensive patrols have been activated in the area.

CP Isa also advised the public to report any individuals with gunshot wounds or sightings of a dark blue Sienna vehicle to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s emergency lines.

DAILY MENTOR reports that the incident highlights the growing security challenges in the region, particularly the threat posed by armed kidnappers targeting high-profile individuals. The Abia State Police Command’s swift response underscores its commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of residents.

As investigations continue, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice and secure the safe release of Lawson Obasi.
