Credits Ibrahim Chatta for Encouragement Amid Toxic Work Environments
Nigerian actor Sanusi Izihaq, popularly known as Apa, has opened up about the challenges he faced in Nollywood and revealed why he chose to remain in the industry. Speaking on actress Biola Bayo’s Talk to B podcast, Apa credited veteran actor Ibrahim Chatta for being his pillar of support during tough times.
Apa, who transitioned from being a Continuity Manager to an actor, shared that he had contemplated leaving Nollywood multiple times due to toxic work environments and unfair treatment. He recounted an incident where a director, who had never met him but had heard about him, vowed to “deal with him,” leaving him emotionally drained.
“I remember when a director who had never met me before but only heard about me vowed to deal with me. This is someone I never worked with, but I was eager to.
However, things got a bit tense, and I despised the toxic working environment, so I became emotional and started crying,” Apa revealed.
He disclosed that Ibrahim Chatta had found him in tears on several occasions and encouraged him not to give up on his acting career. “Ibrahim Chatta has met me crying two to three occasions and asked what happened. I told him that I would leave the industry, but he always advised and encouraged me instead,” Apa said.
The actor also revealed that he had left filmmaking three times but was called back by Chatta to work on his projects, ensuring he stayed in the industry. “I have left filmmaking like three different occasions, but he called me back to work on his project to ensure I don’t leave,” Apa added.
Apa’s story highlights the importance of mentorship and support in navigating the challenges of Nollywood. His perseverance, fueled by Chatta’s encouragement, serves as an inspiration to aspiring actors facing similar struggles in the industry.
As Apa continues to make his mark in Nollywood, his journey underscores the need for a healthier and more supportive work environment in the Nigerian film industry.
