APC Chieftain Urges Governors to Communicate Decisions Effectively Amid School Closure Controversy

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has advised state governors across Nigeria to communicate decisions to citizens clearly before implementing them. Mumuni’s remarks came in response to the recent closure of public schools in some northern states during Ramadan, which has sparked significant controversy.

DAILY POST reports that states such as Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, and Bauchi have directed that all schools remain closed during the holy month of Ramadan. While the decision was reportedly made to accommodate students observing fasting, it has faced opposition from some stakeholders and generated public debate.

In a statement signed by his Media Aide, Rasheed Abubakar, and made available to DAILY POST on Friday, Mumuni emphasized the importance of effectively communicating the reasons behind such decisions to the public.

“I am writing to address the recent school closures in some parts of the northern states of Nigeria during Ramadan. It is my understanding that the decision to temporarily close schools has been made to accommodate children in boarding sections who are observing fasting during this holy month,” Mumuni stated.

He added, “While I appreciate the intention behind this decision, I believe it is essential to communicate the reasons for the closure more effectively to the public. Adequate information can help alleviate any confusion and ensure that parents, students, and the broader community fully understand the rationale for this short closure.”

Mumuni acknowledged the challenges fasting poses for children, particularly in boarding school environments, where managing daily activities while fasting can impact their health and academic performance. He commended the decision to prioritize students’ well-being but stressed the need for better communication to foster understanding and community support.

“To foster better understanding and community support, I recommend that schools or relevant authorities provide clear and timely information regarding the closure,” Mumuni advised.

DAILY MENTOR reports that Mumuni’s call for improved communication highlights the importance of transparency and public engagement in governance. By providing clear explanations for policy decisions, state governments can build trust and ensure that citizens are well-informed and supportive of initiatives aimed at their welfare.

As the debate over the school closures continues, stakeholders are urging authorities to balance religious considerations with educational priorities while maintaining open lines of communication with the public.
