Bishop Warns Rivers Political Crisis Could Threaten Nigeria’s Democracy

Bishop Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha of the Methodist Church Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, warning that it could escalate and jeopardize Nigeria’s democracy if not urgently addressed. The bishop’s remarks come in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling, which has further intensified tensions in the state.

A Call for Peace and Dialogue

In a personally signed statement, Bishop Onuoha urged all parties involved in the Rivers crisis to prioritize peace and dialogue. He questioned why the issue had not been resolved through roundtable discussions, emphasizing that the current situation undermines democratic principles.

“I have sat down and wondered why this issue has not been resolved through roundtable discussions. Is it actually a way to make our democracy grow? For me, there is nothing democratic in this. My worry is what happens next,” the bishop stated.

Warning to the Political Class

Bishop Onuoha cautioned Nigeria’s political elite against overheating the polity for selfish interests. He warned that the crisis in Rivers State could spread to other states, destabilizing the nation and causing ordinary citizens to suffer.

“I will only advise all involved in the Rivers crisis to give peace a chance. The political class must not overheat the nation because of their selfish political interests,” he said.

A Plea to Defend Democracy

The bishop also called on the people of Rivers State and Nigerians of conscience to stand firm in defense of democracy. He stressed the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring that governance serves the interests of the people, not just a select few.

As the political crisis in Rivers State continues to unfold, Bishop Onuoha’s warning serves as a timely reminder of the need for unity, dialogue, and a commitment to democratic principles. The situation calls for urgent intervention to prevent further escalation and protect Nigeria’s democracy.
