The Federal Government has revealed how Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, was persuaded to accept the role of Chairman of the Governing Council of the newly established Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia. According to government officials, Kukah initially hesitated but eventually gave in to pressure and appeals to his sense of duty.
“Bishop Kukah is a respected figure, but it took significant persuasion to get him on board. We emphasized the importance of the role and the need for his leadership,” a senior government official said.
Critics, however, argue that Kukah’s acceptance of the position undermines his reputation as an independent voice, given the federal government’s controversial policies and actions in recent years.
As the university prepares to commence operations, questions remain about whether Kukah’s involvement will bring genuine change or simply serve as a political endorsement of the government’s agenda.
