Canada to Remain in Trade War with US, Says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated that Canada will remain in a trade war with the United States for the foreseeable future. The announcement came on Thursday, a day after what Trudeau described as a “colourful” phone call with US President Donald Trump.

Trudeau emphasized that Canada would continue to engage with senior Trump administration officials regarding the tariffs Washington plans to impose on Canadian imports. He reiterated his goal of having the measures removed, stating, “I can confirm that we will continue to be in a trade war launched by the United States for the foreseeable future.”

In response to the US tariffs, Canada imposed 25 percent tariffs on C$30 billion worth of US imports. Trudeau confirmed that these retaliatory measures would remain in place until the Trump administration ends its trade actions.

The Prime Minister and President Trump reportedly held a 50-minute call on Wednesday, during which they discussed various issues, including trade and border security. Trump has accused Canada of not doing enough to curb the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants across the border.

“It was a colourful call. It was also a very substantive call. We are trying to ensure that these tariffs do not overly harm certain sectors, particularly in the short term,” Trudeau said.

DAILY MENTOR reports that the ongoing trade tensions between the two nations highlight the complexities of US-Canada relations under the Trump administration. Trudeau’s remarks underscore Canada’s determination to protect its economic interests while seeking a resolution to the trade dispute.
