A member of a local church in Anambra State has been arrested by the police for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of two Catholic priests. The suspect, identified as Chukwudi Okeke, was apprehended following a tip-off from residents who noticed his suspicious activities.
The two priests, Reverend Fathers Anthony Eze and Jude Onyekwere, were abducted last week while returning from a pastoral assignment in a rural community. Their abduction sparked outrage and prayers from parishioners, who called for their safe release.
According to the police, Okeke was part of a criminal gang that targeted the priests for ransom. Anambra State Police Commissioner, Aderemi Adeoye, confirmed the arrest during a press briefing on Saturday. “We have in custody one Chukwudi Okeke, who is believed to be a member of the gang responsible for the kidnapping of the two priests. Investigations are ongoing, and we are working to rescue the victims and apprehend other members of the gang,” Adeoye said.
The police also revealed that Okeke had been posing as a devout church member to gather information about potential targets. “This is a clear case of betrayal of trust. The suspect used his position in the church to carry out his criminal activities,” the commissioner added.
The arrest has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing disbelief that a church member could be involved in such a crime. Parishioners have called for increased security around churches and religious leaders, especially in rural areas where kidnappings are prevalent.
The Catholic Diocese of Awka, where the kidnapped priests serve, has appealed for calm and urged the faithful to continue praying for the safe release of the priests. In a statement, the diocese condemned the abduction and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. We call on the kidnappers to release our priests unharmed and urge the security agencies to ensure their safe return,” the statement read.
Kidnapping for ransom has become a major security challenge in Nigeria, with religious leaders, schoolchildren, and travelers frequently targeted. The arrest of Okeke highlights the need for vigilance and community cooperation in tackling the menace.
As investigations continue, residents remain hopeful that the two priests will be rescued and reunited with their families and congregation.
