Nollywood actress Destiny Etiko has filed a N100 million lawsuit against fellow actress Queeneth Hilbert for defamation of character. The legal action comes after Hilbert made allegations against Etiko in a recent interview, accusing her of unprofessional conduct and making disparaging remarks about her career.
In a statement issued by her legal team, Etiko described Hilbert’s comments as “false, malicious, and damaging to her reputation.” The lawsuit, filed at a Lagos High Court, seeks N100 million in damages and a public apology from Hilbert.
“My client, Destiny Etiko, has built her career on hard work, integrity, and professionalism. The baseless allegations made by Queeneth Hilbert are not only untrue but have also caused significant harm to her reputation and emotional well-being,” said Barrister Chika Okeke, Etiko’s lawyer.
The controversy began when Hilbert, in an interview with a popular entertainment blog, accused Etiko of being difficult to work with and making negative comments about her colleagues. Hilbert’s remarks quickly went viral, sparking a heated debate among fans and industry stakeholders.
Etiko, known for her roles in blockbuster Nollywood movies, has denied the allegations and vowed to clear her name. “I have always conducted myself with dignity and respect. I will not sit back and allow anyone tarnish my hard-earned reputation,” she said in a social media post.
Hilbert, who has yet to respond to the lawsuit, has faced backlash from fans and colleagues for her comments. Many have called for her to apologize to Etiko and resolve the matter amicably.
The lawsuit has drawn attention to the issue of defamation in the entertainment industry, with many calling for stricter measures to protect the reputations of public figures. “This case highlights the need for accountability in the industry. False accusations can have serious consequences, and those who make them should be held responsible,” said filmmaker Uche Jombo.
As the legal battle unfolds, fans of both actresses are eagerly awaiting the outcome. The case is expected to set a precedent for how defamation cases are handled in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
