Doctors Warn Against Fasting for Children Under Six During Ramadan

Medical Expert Advises Gradual Introduction to Fasting for Older Children, Highlights Risks for Elderly and Pregnant Women

Mariam Shiru, President of the Association of Resident Doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (ARD-UITH), has cautioned against allowing children under six years old to participate in the Ramadan fast. Speaking to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, Shiru emphasized that young children are not fully developed and fasting could pose serious health risks.

“Fasting can lead to dehydration, low blood sugar, and other health problems in young children,” she explained. Shiru recommended that children between six and twelve years old could begin learning about fasting gradually, under adult supervision. She suggested starting with short periods, such as skipping one meal or fasting for a few hours, to help them build endurance.

For teenagers aged 13 and above, Shiru noted that they could typically fast for longer periods but stressed the importance of ensuring they are healthy enough to do so.

“Teenagers should consult with a healthcare professional or a trusted adult before starting any fasting regimen,” she advised.

Shiru also highlighted specific groups that should approach fasting with caution.

Children with chronic conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease, as well as elderly individuals with age-related health issues, should avoid fasting or seek medical advice. “Elderly individuals with conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, or heart disease may need to avoid fasting or modify their fasting regimen,” she said.

Pregnant women, particularly those in their first trimester, were also advised against fasting due to the critical phase of fetal development. For those in the second and third trimesters, fasting may be permissible under medical supervision, but the benefits and risks must be carefully weighed.

Shiru emphasized the importance of adult supervision for children who fast and urged all individuals to prioritize hydration and health during Ramadan. Her recommendations aim to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable groups while observing the holy month.

As Ramadan approaches, her advice serves as a timely reminder for families to approach fasting with mindfulness and care, particularly for children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
