NIH Halts Funding Amid Musk’s Push for Government Efficiency; Move Follows Criticism of California’s Immigration Policies

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced on Wednesday the cancellation of seven grants for transgender experiments on animals, marking a significant shift in federal research funding. The decision, disclosed via DOGE’s official website, includes the termination of a 532,000granttostudytheeffectsofcrosssextestosteronetreatmentonmiceanda33,000 grant to investigate feminizing hormone therapy in male rats.

“Yesterday, @NIH cancelled seven grants for transgender experiments on animals, including 532Ktouseamousemodeltoinvestigatetheeffectsofcrosssextestosteronetreatment;33K to test ‘feminizing hormone therapy in the male rat,’” DOGE’s post stated.

The move comes just days after Musk criticized California’s immigration policies during an interview with Joe Rogan. Musk accused the state of encouraging an influx of illegal immigrants, highlighting the financial burden on taxpayers.

“Healthcare services are free for illegals in California with a whopping $9 billion tax burden,” Musk said during the interview.

The cancellation of the grants aligns with Musk’s broader push for government efficiency and fiscal responsibility. However, it has sparked debate over the role of federal funding in scientific research and the ethical implications of animal testing.

As DOGE continues to scrutinize government spending, the decision to halt these grants underscores Musk’s influence on policy and his commitment to reshaping federal priorities. The move also raises questions about the future of research funding and the balance between scientific inquiry and ethical considerations.
