Falana to Senate: "Courts Have Stopped Illegal Suspension of Legislators; Natasha’s Suspension Must Be Lifted"

Abuja, Nigeria – Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has called on the Nigerian Senate to immediately lift the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stating that courts have consistently ruled against the illegal suspension of legislators. Falana made this demand in a statement issued on Sunday, following the Senate’s decision to suspend Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months over her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Falana described the suspension as unconstitutional and a violation of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s rights, urging the Senate to respect the rule of law and reverse its decision.

Falana’s Argument

In his statement, Falana cited several court judgments that have declared the suspension of legislators illegal and unconstitutional. He emphasized that the Senate lacks the power to suspend any of its members, as such actions undermine the principles of democracy and representation.

“The courts have consistently held that the suspension of legislators is illegal and unconstitutional. The Senate cannot arrogate to itself the power to suspend a member who was duly elected by the people. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension must be lifted immediately,” Falana said.

He further argued that the suspension was an attempt to silence Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and discourage other lawmakers from speaking out against misconduct.

Background of the Suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended by the Senate last week after she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. The suspension has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the Senate’s decision as an abuse of power and a violation of due process.

The Senate defended its action, stating that Akpoti-Uduaghan violated its rules by making unsubstantiated allegations against the Senate President. However, critics argue that the suspension is politically motivated and aimed at silencing dissent.

Calls for Justice

Falana’s intervention has added to the growing calls for justice and accountability in the matter. Civil society organizations, gender rights advocates, and opposition lawmakers have condemned the suspension, describing it as a setback for democracy and gender equality in Nigeria.

“The suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is a clear attempt to intimidate and silence women in politics. It sends a dangerous message to women who dare to speak out against harassment and abuse,” said Aisha Yusuf, a gender rights activist.

Senate’s Response

As of now, the Senate has not responded to Falana’s demand or the public outcry over the suspension. However, sources within the Senate suggest that the leadership is under pressure to review its decision and address the controversy.

The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has reignited debates about the rule of law, gender equality, and the treatment of women in Nigerian politics. As Femi Falana and other stakeholders continue to demand justice, the Senate faces a critical test of its commitment to democracy and accountability.

For now, the focus remains on whether the Senate will heed the calls to lift the suspension and uphold the principles of justice and fairness.
