Former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel Arrested Over Alleged N700 Billion Fraud

Abuja, Nigeria – Operatives from the Corporate Headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, over allegations of a N700 billion fraud. The arrest followed an invitation extended to Emmanuel, who reportedly honored the summons on Tuesday to respond to charges of money laundering, diversion of funds, and theft.

According to sources, Emmanuel arrived at the EFCC office around 12:30 pm and is currently being interrogated by operatives. The allegations stem from a petition filed by the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NCAT), which accused the former governor of financial misconduct during his tenure.

Investigations by the EFCC revealed that N31 billion was withdrawn in cash from a single account named "Office of the Governor" between 2019 and 2023. The petitioner further alleged that Emmanuel received N3 trillion from the Federation Account over eight years but left behind a debt profile of N500 billion and unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion. Additionally, he is accused of failing to account for N700 billion.

The EFCC’s probe into the matter is ongoing, with Emmanuel expected to provide clarifications on the allegations. Efforts to reach the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

The arrest of the former governor has sparked widespread reactions, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds. The case highlights the EFCC’s continued efforts to combat corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria, particularly among high-profile individuals.

As investigations proceed, stakeholders are closely monitoring the developments, with expectations that the findings will shed more light on the allegations and ensure justice is served. Further updates are anticipated as the EFCC continues its interrogation and gathers more evidence.
