Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has invited members of the State House of Assembly for a crucial meeting following the recent Supreme Court judgement that affirmed his election. The meeting, scheduled to hold on Monday, is aimed at fostering unity and addressing the political tensions that have plagued the state since the 2023 elections.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara emphasized the need for collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government to ensure peace and development in the state. “The Supreme Court’s judgement has put an end to all legal disputes. It is now time for us to come together and work for the progress of Rivers State,” the governor said.
The invitation comes amid a lingering rift between the governor and a faction of the Assembly loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike. The political crisis has led to a series of confrontations, including attempts to impeach Governor Fubara and parallel sittings by lawmakers.
Governor Fubara expressed optimism that the meeting would mark a new beginning for the state. “We cannot afford to let political differences hinder the development of our state. I am committed to working with all stakeholders to move Rivers State forward,” he added.
The Supreme Court’s judgement, delivered last week, dismissed all petitions challenging Fubara’s victory in the 2023 governorship election. The ruling was hailed as a victory for democracy by the governor’s supporters, who called for an end to the political impasse.
However, the faction of lawmakers loyal to Wike has remained defiant, with some vowing to continue their opposition to Fubara’s administration. Political analysts have described the upcoming meeting as a litmus test for the governor’s ability to unite the state and restore stability.
