Former Captain Expresses Concern Over Striker’s Goal Drought and Lack of Support
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has admitted he is “worried” about the performances of striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has yet to score in 18 games for the Red Devils this season. Neville expressed his concerns following Manchester United’s FA Cup elimination by Fulham on Sunday, where Hojlund featured in a lackluster attacking lineup.
Speaking on The Overlap US, Neville highlighted the challenges Hojlund is facing, including a lack of confidence and insufficient support from his teammates.
“I thought Manchester United would have a scare but get through against Fulham,” Neville said. “They have got injuries which are a factor, but the balance of the team is wrong. They have got no pace up front. They started with Hojlund, Zirkzee, and Eriksen.”
Neville pointed out Hojlund’s struggles during the match, describing his performance as a cause for concern. “Hojlund had a really difficult game [against Fulham], it was a worry. That was my biggest takeaway from the game-there is a lad that now hasn’t scored in 18 games,” he added.
Despite acknowledging Hojlund’s potential, Neville emphasized the striker’s current lack of confidence and the challenges posed by the team’s setup. “I have to say I think he’s got a bit of talent and has something physically. But he’s short of confidence at the moment and is really struggling. It’s sad,” Neville said.
He also criticized the lack of attacking support for Hojlund, noting the absence of dynamic full-backs and creative midfielders. “What chance has Hojlund got with Zirkzee and Eriksen behind him? They haven’t got attacking full-backs either,” Neville remarked.
Hojlund joined Manchester United in the summer of 2023 from Atalanta, with high expectations surrounding his arrival. However, his goal drought and the team’s overall struggles have raised questions about his adaptation to the Premier League and the club’s ability to provide him with the necessary support.
As Manchester United looks to regroup, Neville’s comments underscore the need for tactical adjustments and improved team dynamics to help Hojlund rediscover his form and fulfill his potential at Old Trafford.
