In a devastating attack, gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have killed over 20 farmers across four communities in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State. The armed assailants reportedly launched their assault in the early hours of the weekend, unleashing terror on residents of Aba Pastor, Aba Sunday, Ademekun Camp, and Aba Alajido Camps within Ala Elefosan.
According to reports, 14 bodies have been recovered so far, while search efforts are ongoing for other missing persons. The attack has left the affected communities in shock and mourning, with many residents fleeing their homes for safety.
Princess Adelowo Adekemisola, the Regent of Ademekun Village, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers infiltrated the communities through the Edo-Ondo boundary before opening fire indiscriminately. She recalled that similar attacks had occurred in the past but were curbed during the administration of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, when the Amotekun security outfit intervened and arrested the perpetrators.
“Since then, peace had returned to the community until now,” she lamented.
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed the attack and assured that police operatives have been deployed to the affected areas to restore order and investigate the incident.
The attack has reignited concerns about the security of farming communities in Ondo State and the broader issue of clashes between farmers and herdsmen. Residents are calling for urgent government intervention to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the safety of vulnerable communities.
