A high-speed chase in Abuja ended dramatically on Saturday as police arrested a suspected drug trafficker following a crash. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Chinedu Okoro, was apprehended after his vehicle overturned while attempting to evade arrest.
The incident began when officers of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command flagged down Okoro’s car for a routine check. However, the suspect allegedly refused to stop, leading to a high-speed pursuit through the streets of Abuja. The chase came to a dramatic end when Okoro lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a roadside barrier.
According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the suspect was found in possession of a large quantity of illicit drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine. “The suspect attempted to flee, but our officers were determined to bring him to justice. We recovered a significant amount of illegal substances from his vehicle,” Adeh said.
The crash caused minor damage to the roadside barrier but no injuries to bystanders. Okoro, however, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment before being transferred to police custody.
The arrest has been hailed as a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking in the nation’s capital. “This is a clear message to criminals that Abuja is not a safe haven for illegal activities. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our residents,” said FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba.
The suspect is expected to be charged with drug trafficking and other related offenses. Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation to determine the source of the drugs and identify other members of the trafficking network.
The dramatic chase and arrest have drawn attention to the growing issue of drug trafficking in Nigeria, with many calling for stricter measures to combat the menace. As the case unfolds, residents of Abuja are hopeful that the police will continue to crack down on criminal activities in the city.
