The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting unionism and improving the welfare of aviation workers in Nigeria. The minister made this pledge during the 11th Edition of Aviation Workers’ Week and Award Night, held on February 25, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre in Abuja.
The event, themed “The Role of Aviation Trade Unions in Galvanizing Workers’ Support for the Attainment of Ministerial Mandates,” brought together key stakeholders, including heads of aviation agencies, sector professionals, and airline operators.
Unionism as a Catalyst for Progress
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Keyamo emphasized that unionism should not be antagonistic but a driving force for progress. He advocated for a culture of dialogue, stating, “Jaw-jaw is always better than war-war.”
The minister also highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive on the prompt payment of workers’ salaries, assuring that the policy is effectively in place. He encouraged staff to embrace the Civil Service Implementation Plan, which aims to modernize the service and improve efficiency.
“I assure you of my unwavering support in fostering growth and development within the ministry and the aviation industry,” Keyamo said.
Recognition and Awards
During the event, Keyamo received an award in recognition of his proactive approach to transforming the Nigerian aviation sector. The accolade underscored his efforts to address challenges and improve working conditions for aviation workers.
Stakeholders Applaud Union Efforts
Director of Human Resources Management, Bello Sani Torankawa, commended the Chairman of the Joint Consultative Negotiating Council (JCNC) for his resilience and dedication. He emphasized the vital role of unions in focusing on workers’ welfare and development, reiterating management’s support for the annual Aviation Workers’ Week initiative.
Air Commodore Ademola Ojuku, President of the Aviation Round Table (ART), also praised the JCNC for its consistent efforts in uniting aviation professionals to drive the industry’s progress.
A Call for Collaboration
In his welcome address, Comrade Hector Nnadi, Chairman of the Joint Consultative and Negotiating Council (JCNC), called on aviation trade unions to strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development. He stressed the importance of aligning workers’ interests with government policies to ensure the growth and sustainability of the aviation sector.
“Trade unions play a critical role in ensuring that workers’ interests are harmonized with government policies. By working together, we can achieve the successful implementation of ministerial mandates and drive the industry forward,” Nnadi said.
