Abuja, Nigeria – The Labour Party (LP) has firmly stated its commitment to preserving its ideological integrity and resisting any attempts by “reactionary forces” to take control of the party. This declaration was made by LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in response to a recent call by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for the party to consider rebranding, mergers, or coalitions.
The NLC, in a communique issued after its meeting, directed its National Administrative Council (NAC) to explore immediate steps, including rebranding, mergers, or forming coalitions, to reclaim the Labour Party and realign it with its original ideological roots.
The NLC emphasized its determination to prevent the party from being hijacked by forces that do not represent the interests of Nigerian workers and the broader masses.
“The congress will not allow the Labour Party to be hijacked by reactionary forces who do not represent the aspirations of the working people and broader Nigerian people,” the NLC stated. “The NLC remains committed to ensuring that the party remains a true vehicle for the emancipation of Nigerian workers and the oppressed masses.”
In his response, Ifoh dismissed the possibility of a merger but affirmed the LP’s openness to partnerships aimed at strengthening its position ahead of future elections. He reiterated the party’s dedication to its core values and its role as a platform for the advancement of workers’ rights and social justice.
“The Labour Party remains open to collaborations aimed at strengthening its position ahead of future elections,” Ifoh said. “However, we are committed to preserving the party’s ideological foundation and ensuring it remains a true representative of the working class and the oppressed.”
The LP’s stance underscores its determination to maintain its independence and resist external influences that could dilute its mission. The party’s leadership has called on its members and supporters to remain steadfast, emphasizing the importance of unity and ideological clarity in achieving its goals.
As political dynamics continue to evolve ahead of future elections, the Labour Party’s commitment to its principles and its willingness to engage in strategic partnerships will likely shape its trajectory in Nigeria’s political landscape. The NLC’s push for rebranding or mergers highlights the ongoing debate within the labour movement about the best path forward to achieve its objectives.
