Major Dr. Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late military ruler General Sani Abacha, has officially joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), signaling a new chapter in his political career focused on national development. Al-Mustapha arrived at the SDP headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, accompanied by his team, and was warmly welcomed by party leaders and supporters.
In his address, Al-Mustapha emphasized that his decision to join the SDP reflects his commitment to promoting leadership rooted in justice, security, and progress. “My move to the SDP is a step toward contributing to the development of our nation. I am committed to working with like-minded individuals to build a Nigeria that prioritizes justice, security, and sustainable progress,” he stated.
Al-Mustapha’s defection to the SDP comes just days after former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai also joined the party. El-Rufai has previously indicated that the SDP would challenge the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration in the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a potential political showdown.
A prominent figure in Nigerian history, Al-Mustapha served as Chief Security Officer to General Sani Abacha during his military regime from 1993 to 1998. He was known as one of Abacha’s closest confidants and played a significant role during that era. His entry into the SDP is expected to bolster the party’s influence, particularly in the northern region, where he commands considerable respect and support.
The SDP, which has been gaining momentum with the recent defections of high-profile politicians, is positioning itself as a formidable opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections. Al-Mustapha’s addition to the party’s ranks is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its appeal and broaden its base.
As Al-Mustapha embarks on this new political journey, his focus on justice, security, and progress aligns with the SDP’s vision for a better Nigeria. His involvement is expected to bring a unique perspective to the party’s agenda, particularly in addressing the nation’s security challenges and fostering inclusive development.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the SDP’s growing alliance of influential figures like Al-Mustapha and El-Rufai signals a dynamic shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, setting the stage for a highly competitive electoral contest.
