A tragic accident occurred in Oyo State on Saturday when a Mazda bus loaded with wooden planks collided with a petrol tanker, resulting in a massive fire. The incident, which took place along the Ibadan-Oyo Expressway, has left several people injured and properties destroyed.
According to eyewitnesses, the Mazda bus, which was traveling at high speed, lost control and rammed into the stationary petrol tanker. The impact caused an explosion, engulfing both vehicles in flames. The fire quickly spread to nearby shops and buildings, causing extensive damage.
The Oyo State Fire Service and emergency response teams were quick to arrive at the scene, working tirelessly to extinguish the blaze and rescue victims. “It was a chaotic scene, but our team acted swiftly to contain the fire and provide assistance to those affected,” said Adewale Adeleke, the state’s Chief Fire Officer.
While the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, preliminary reports indicate that several people sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The driver of the Mazda bus and the tanker driver are among those receiving medical attention.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest that speeding and mechanical failure may have played a role. The Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYSTMA) has urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such incidents.
“This is a sad reminder of the dangers of reckless driving. We appeal to all road users to prioritize safety and avoid actions that could lead to loss of lives and properties,” said OYSTMA spokesperson, Tunde Ajibade.
The accident has caused significant traffic disruption along the busy expressway, with motorists advised to use alternative routes. As the community mourns the losses and begins the process of recovery, authorities have promised to take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
