NANS Lauds FG’s Adoption of TASUED as Federal University

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Federal Government for its decision to adopt the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) as a federal university. The move, announced by the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, is aimed at enhancing the quality of teacher education in Nigeria and addressing the shortage of qualified teachers in the country.

In a statement issued by NANS President, Comrade Usman Barambu, the student body described the decision as a “step in the right direction.” According to Barambu, the adoption of TASUED as a federal institution will provide more opportunities for students and improve the standard of education in Nigeria.

“We applaud the Federal Government for this bold and progressive decision. TASUED has a proven track record of excellence in teacher education, and its adoption as a federal university will further strengthen its capacity to produce highly qualified teachers for our nation,” Barambu said.

The Minister of Education, Professor Mamman, explained that the decision was part of the government’s efforts to revitalize the education sector and address the challenges facing teacher training institutions. “The adoption of TASUED as a federal university is a strategic move to improve the quality of teacher education and ensure that our schools are staffed with competent and well-trained teachers,” he said.

The announcement has been met with widespread approval from stakeholders in the education sector, including lecturers, students, and parents. Many believe that the move will enhance the reputation of TASUED and attract more funding and resources to the institution.

TASUED, located in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, was established in 2005 as the first specialized university of education in Nigeria. The institution has been at the forefront of teacher training and educational research, producing thousands of graduates who have made significant contributions to the education sector.

As the Federal Government moves to implement the decision, NANS has pledged to support the process and ensure that the interests of students are protected. The association also called on the government to extend similar interventions to other state-owned institutions facing challenges.
