Nigerian Women Continue to Face Inequality, Discrimination, and Harassment, Accord Laments on International Women’s Day 2025

As the world commemorates International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, Nigerian women are still grappling with systemic inequality, discrimination, harassment, and early marriage, according to a report by the Accord for Women’s Rights (Accord). The organization highlighted the persistent challenges faced by women and girls in Nigeria, despite global efforts to promote gender equality.

In a statement released on Saturday, Accord expressed deep concern over the widespread gender-based violence, limited access to education, and economic disparities that continue to hinder the progress of Nigerian women. The report also emphasized the prevalence of early marriage, particularly in rural areas, which deprives young girls of opportunities for personal and professional development.

“Nigerian women are still subjected to harmful cultural practices, workplace discrimination, and sexual harassment,” the statement read. “These issues are further exacerbated by inadequate legal frameworks and poor enforcement of existing laws designed to protect women’s rights.”

The organization called on the Nigerian government, civil society, and international partners to take urgent action to address these challenges. Accord urged policymakers to prioritize gender-sensitive legislation, improve access to quality education for girls, and ensure the enforcement of laws against gender-based violence.

International Women’s Day 2025, themed “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity,” serves as a reminder of the need for collective action to achieve gender equality. However, Accord’s report underscores the significant work that remains to be done in Nigeria to ensure that women and girls can live free from discrimination and violence.

As Nigerian women join the global celebration of IWD, activists and advocates are using the occasion to amplify their calls for justice, equality, and empowerment. The day also serves as a rallying point for renewed efforts to dismantle the barriers that continue to hold Nigerian women back.
