Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, took a significant step toward qualifying for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after securing a 3-1 victory over South Africa in the first leg of their qualifying tie. The match took place at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday.

South Africa, however, fought back early in the second half as skipper Katleho Malebana converted a penalty in the 47th minute to reduce the deficit. Despite the hosts’ efforts, Chidi struck again in the 68th minute, restoring Nigeria’s two-goal advantage with her second goal of the match.
The 3-1 victory gives the Flamingos a strong advantage heading into the second leg, which will be played at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne next Saturday. The aggregate winner of the two-legged tie will advance to the final qualifying round for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
