Notorious Bandit Leader Shekau Killed in Kaduna by Rival Faction

A notorious bandit leader, who adopted the name Shekau due to his infamy, has been ambushed and killed by a rival faction in Kachia Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State. Intelligence sources revealed that the attack was orchestrated by Shumo, a rival bandit leader and indigene of Ragadada, Buruku in Birnin Gwari LGA.

The ambush, which occurred on March 5, 2025, was reportedly in retaliation for a previous attack by Shekau, who had seized Shumo’s weapons and killed several of his fighters. During the clash, Shekau and some of his lieutenants were killed. The bodies of the neutralized bandits were later buried by individuals identified as Yellow Million, Baba Kusa, and an imam from Kabode village in Kachia LGA.

While banditry in Kaduna has significantly declined due to non-kinetic efforts by the Kaduna State government and security agencies, internal rivalries among bandit factions have escalated, leading to multiple casualties in recent times.

DAILY MENTOR reports that the killing of Shekau highlights the ongoing power struggles within bandit groups in the region. These internal conflicts, while reducing the overall threat posed by banditry, continue to destabilize local communities and pose challenges to security efforts.

The Kaduna State government and security agencies remain committed to restoring peace and stability in the region, leveraging both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to address the root causes of banditry and criminality. The elimination of Shekau marks a significant development in the fight against banditry, but the situation underscores the need for sustained efforts to dismantle these criminal networks entirely.
