A combined team of security operatives, including members of a vigilance group, has eliminated Maigemu, a notorious kingpin of the Lakurawa terror group, in Kebbi State. The state’s Director of Security, Cabinet Office, Alhaji AbdulRahman Usman-Zagga, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday in Birnin Kebbi.
Usman-Zagga revealed that Maigemu was neutralized on Thursday during a fierce gun battle at Kuncin Baba in Arewa Local Government Area, a remote and challenging terrain.
He stated, “This success comes just a week after Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi visited Bagiza and Rausa Kade communities in Arewa Local Government to condole with residents over the killing of six people by suspected Lakurawa cattle rustlers. During the governor’s visit, he assured the affected communities of immediate security reinforcement and strategic measures to tackle criminal activities in the area. Today, his proactive approach has yielded results with the elimination of this kingpin. His corpse is available as evidence.”
The director commended Governor Idris for his commitment to enhancing security and providing continuous logistic support to security operatives, particularly those on special operations. He also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing intelligence and reporting suspicious activities to ensure lasting peace in the state.
Lakurawa, a terror group that infiltrated Sokoto and Kebbi states from the Niger Republic, has been a significant contributor to the insecurity plaguing the North-west region. The group is known for its involvement in cattle rustling, kidnappings, and other violent crimes.
DAILY MENTOR reports that the elimination of Maigemu marks a significant victory in the ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in Kebbi State. The operation demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between security agencies and local vigilance groups in tackling criminal elements.
Governor Idris’s proactive measures and the dedication of security operatives have been instrumental in achieving this milestone. The state government has reiterated its commitment to sustaining the momentum in the fight against terrorism and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
The development is expected to bring relief to communities affected by the activities of the Lakurawa group and serve as a deterrent to other criminal elements operating in the region.
