Oando Foundation has inaugurated its Foundational Learning Improvement Programme (LEARNOVATE-FLIP), a groundbreaking initiative designed to address the learning crisis in Nigeria and improve foundational literacy and numeracy among pupils in four states: Ebonyi, Plateau, Sokoto, and Adamawa.
The programme, implemented in collaboration with Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) Africa, Quality Education Development Associates (QEDA), and Hilltrust Top Foundation, leverages evidence-based methodologies to enhance educational outcomes for young learners.
A Dual Approach to Learning Improvement
Tonia Uduimoh, Head of Oando Foundation, explained that LEARNOVATE-FLIP integrates two key methodologies to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education:
Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL): Executed in partnership with TaRL Africa, this component provides remedial literacy and numeracy support for primary four to six pupils in Adamawa State, particularly targeting children with interrupted schooling.
Aligning with Sustainable Development Goals
Uduimoh expressed excitement about the initiative, stating that it aligns with Oando Foundation’s commitment to ensuring every child, especially in underserved communities, has access to quality education.
“By incorporating evidence-based methodologies and focusing on lesson instructions and assessments in mother-tongue, we aim to address the existing learning gaps among young learners and create a deeper understanding of how to improve educational outcomes for Nigerian students,” she said.
She added that the initiative supports the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which advocates for inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
“Ultimately, our goal is to empower children with the foundational skills they need to succeed, contributing to the sustainable growth and development of their communities and Nigeria as a whole,” Uduimoh emphasized.
Commendation from Stakeholders
Rt. Hon. Mrs. Patience Ogodo, Chairman of the Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), lauded Oando Foundation’s efforts in transforming education in Nigeria.
“The LEARNOVATE-FLIP initiative represents a strategic and impactful response to the pressing challenges of foundational literacy and numeracy, particularly for children in underserved communities. By integrating evidence-based methodologies and prioritizing inclusive approaches such as mother-tongue assessments, this programme not only improves learning outcomes but also empowers students to realize their full potential,” Ogodo said.
She expressed pride in collaborating on the initiative, describing it as a shared vision of equitable access to quality education.
“Together, we are driving sustainable change, enriching lives, and building a more inclusive and prosperous society for future generations,” she added.
Programme Implementation
The LEARNOVATE-FLIP initiative has already commenced and will run concurrently in the target states throughout the 2024/2025 academic year. The programme aims to create a lasting impact by addressing learning gaps, improving educational outcomes, and empowering children with the skills needed for lifelong success.
