Orji Uzor Kalu Laments Lack of Respect for Nigerian Lawmakers Amid Economic Hardship

Abuja, Nigeria – Former Senate Chief Whip and ex-Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed concern over the lack of appreciation for the work done by Nigerian federal lawmakers, stating that they are often taken for granted. Kalu made these remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, where he discussed the challenges faced by lawmakers amid the country’s economic difficulties.

Kalu, who currently represents Abia North Senatorial District, emphasized that lawmakers work tirelessly but receive little recognition for their efforts. He revealed that he has had to tighten his belt due to the prevailing economic hardship, dismissing the widespread belief that Nigerian legislators are among the highest-paid in the world.

“The Assembly does not control any money. We sign the budget, and it goes to the MDAs (Ministries, Departments, and Agencies). For me, I have tightened my belt,” Kalu stated. He added that many people underestimate the amount of work lawmakers undertake, often focusing solely on their wages.

Kalu shared insights into the demanding nature of legislative duties, noting that he often works late into the night attending committee meetings and other engagements. “Before, I usually thought these lawmakers just sat there. But there’s a lot of work going on there. I’m telling you the truth. Sometimes I don’t go to my house until 11 pm, sitting in different committee meetings. So, people take Senators and House of Reps members for granted,” he said.

The former governor stressed that lawmakers deserve more respect for their role in governance, clarifying that their primary responsibility is to make laws, while the executive arm implements them. “But it’s not supposed to be like that. We should be respected. We agreed that we’re not the people running the country’s economy. Our duty is to make laws; another arm of the government will execute the laws we’ve made,” he explained.

Kalu’s comments come at a time when Nigerians are grappling with rising inflation, unemployment, and other economic challenges. His remarks highlight the disconnect between public perception and the realities of legislative work, as well as the need for greater understanding and appreciation of the roles played by lawmakers in nation-building.

As the country continues to navigate its economic challenges, Kalu’s call for respect and recognition of lawmakers’ contributions underscores the importance of fostering a more collaborative and supportive relationship between the government and the citizens it serves.
