Pope Francis Hospitalized with Acute Respiratory Insufficiency, Vatican Confirms

Pope Francis has been hospitalized after suffering two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, the Vatican announced on Monday evening. The Holy See Press Office revealed that the condition was caused by a significant buildup of endobronchial mucus, leading to bronchospasms.

Medical Interventions

To address the issue, two bronchoscopies were performed on the 88-year-old pontiff to remove large secretions. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation was also resumed earlier in the day to assist with his breathing.

Despite the health scare, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis remained “alert, oriented, and cooperative” throughout the ordeal. However, his prognosis remains guarded as medical teams continue to monitor his condition.

Understanding Acute Respiratory Insufficiency

Acute respiratory insufficiency occurs when an individual’s oxygen levels fall below the required threshold, often due to underlying health conditions or blockages in the airways. The Pope’s recent health challenges have raised concerns about his ability to maintain his rigorous schedule.

Pope’s Message on Migrants and Refugees

Earlier on Monday, before his hospitalization, Pope Francis announced the theme for the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees: “Migrants: Missionaries of Hope.” In a post on his official X account, the pontiff emphasized the resilience and faith of migrants and refugees, stating, “Many migrants and refugees bear witness to hope through their trust in God.”

The event, scheduled for October during the Jubilee celebrations, will highlight the contributions and struggles of migrants and refugees worldwide.

As Pope Francis recovers, the Vatican has assured the public that he is receiving the best possible care. His health update has drawn global attention, with millions of Catholics around the world praying for his swift recovery.
