Rivers Crisis: Two RSIEC Commissioners Resign Amid Political Uncertainty

Two commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) have resigned from their positions, citing political uncertainty and interference as reasons for their decision. The resignations come amid a deepening political crisis in the state, which has seen tensions rise between the executive and legislative arms of government.

The commissioners, whose names were not immediately disclosed, submitted their resignation letters to the RSIEC chairman on Friday. In their letters, they expressed concerns about the inability of the commission to function independently and effectively due to political pressure.

“The current political climate in Rivers State has made it impossible for us to carry out our duties without bias or interference. We believe it is in the best interest of the state and our integrity to step down,” one of the commissioners stated.

The resignations have raised concerns about the upcoming local government elections in the state, which are scheduled to hold later this year. The RSIEC is responsible for conducting the elections, but the political crisis has cast doubt on the commission’s ability to deliver a free and fair process.

The crisis in Rivers State began months ago when a faction of the State House of Assembly, loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, attempted to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The move was thwarted, but the Assembly has remained deeply divided, with both factions holding parallel sessions and making conflicting decisions.

Governor Fubara has called for calm and urged all stakeholders to prioritize the development of the state. “We must put aside our differences and work together for the progress of Rivers State. The people deserve peace and good governance,” he said in a recent statement.

However, the resignations of the RSIEC commissioners have further complicated the situation, with many fearing that the political crisis could escalate and disrupt the electoral process.

As the state grapples with the crisis, residents are hopeful that a resolution will be reached soon to ensure stability and the smooth conduct of the local government elections.
