Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Rejects Six-Month Suspension, Calls It Illegal

The Senator representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has rejected her six-month suspension from the Senate, describing it as “illegal” and vowing to continue serving her constituents.

In a statement issued in response to the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan asserted that the decision by the Senate does not invalidate her legitimacy as a duly elected senator. She criticized the suspension as a violation of natural justice, fairness, and equity, and pledged to remain committed to her duties.

“Against the culture of silence, intimidation, and victim-shaming, my unjust suspension from the Nigerian Senate invalidates the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity,” she said. “The illegal suspension does not withdraw my legitimacy as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I will continue to use my duly elected position to serve my constituents and country to the best of my ability till 2027 and beyond.”

The suspension, announced on Thursday, followed allegations of sexual harassment made by Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The decision was based on a recommendation from the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

As part of the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s salary and security details will be withdrawn, and she will be barred from accessing the National Assembly premises.

DAILY MENTOR reports that the suspension has sparked controversy, with many questioning the Senate’s handling of the allegations and the subsequent disciplinary action. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s defiance highlights the growing tension within the Senate and raises concerns about the treatment of whistleblowers and critics within the legislative body.

The Kogi Central senator’s rejection of the suspension underscores her determination to challenge what she perceives as an unjust and politically motivated decision. Her case has drawn attention to broader issues of accountability, transparency, and the protection of elected officials who speak out against misconduct.

As the situation unfolds, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s stance is expected to galvanize support from her constituents and allies, while also intensifying debates about the Senate’s internal governance and its response to allegations of impropriety.
