Bauchi, Nigeria – The death toll from Sunday’s tragic stampede during an alms-giving event in Bauchi State has risen to seven, according to the state police command. Initially, four fatalities were reported, but on Monday, the Bauchi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil, confirmed that three more women had succumbed to their injuries.
The incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. at Shafa Holdings Company Plc on Jos Road, Bauchi, during the company’s annual Zakat (almsgiving) exercise aimed at assisting the less privileged. Witnesses reported that a chaotic rush to receive alms led to the stampede, trapping several individuals, including women and children.
Two of the additional victims died at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), while the third passed away at home after being taken away by her family. Several others sustained injuries during the incident.
SP Wakil assured the public that investigations are ongoing and more details will be provided as they emerge. The tragic event has sparked widespread concern and calls for better crowd management during such charitable activities to prevent future occurrences.
