US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause on tariffs against Mexico until April 2, following discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The decision ensures that Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on goods covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the move was made as an accommodation and out of respect for President Sheinbaum. He emphasized the positive relationship between the two leaders and their collaborative efforts to address border security and illegal immigration.
“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement.
This agreement is in place until 2 April. I have done this as an accommodation and out of respect for President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard together on the border, both in terms of stopping illegal immigrants from entering the United States and, likewise, preventing the trafficking of fentanyl.
Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation,” Trump wrote.
DAILY MENTOR reports that the pause on tariffs reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen US-Mexico relations and address shared challenges, including immigration and drug trafficking. The decision underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement in resolving trade and security issues between the two nations.
