Two drug traffickers arrested in 2024 for transporting a massive consignment of cannabis in vehicles bearing fake presidency number plates have been sentenced to 35 years in prison each. The culprits, Shuaibu Nuhu Isa, 55, and Zidon Zurga, 50, were convicted by Justice Bala Usman of the Federal High Court in Yola on Friday, March 7, 2025.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with military operatives, intercepted the traffickers near the Numan Bridge in Adamawa State. The illegal consignment, consisting of 626 blocks of cannabis weighing 500.8kg, was hidden in two tinted vehicles: a Toyota Hilux (Lagos NT 829 AAA) and a Prado SUV (01B-266 FG), both bearing fake presidency number plates.
The traffickers had intended to use the counterfeit plates to deceive security personnel and avoid checks while transporting the drugs from Ondo State to Mubi, Adamawa State. However, their plan failed, leading to their arrest and the seizure of the vehicles and illicit contents.
After a thorough trial, Justice Bala Usman sentenced Isa and Zurga to 35 years in prison each and ordered the forfeiture of the two vehicles used in the operation.
Reacting to the conviction, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri commended the NDLEA and security agencies for their dedication to eradicating drug trafficking and making the state drug-free. He also urged individuals struggling with drug addiction to seek help and contribute positively to society.
DAILY MENTOR reports that the successful prosecution of the traffickers underscores the NDLEA’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes and ensuring that offenders face the full wrath of the law. The case also highlights the importance of inter-agency collaboration in tackling organized crime and maintaining public safety.
The conviction serves as a stern warning to drug traffickers and a reminder of the consequences of engaging in illicit activities. It also reinforces the government’s resolve to create a safer and healthier society by addressing the root causes of drug abuse and trafficking.
