Minister of Works, David Umahi, has declared that President Bola Tinubu deserves 100% of the South-East’s votes in the 2027 general elections as a gesture of appreciation for the numerous developmental projects executed in the region under his administration. Umahi made this statement on Monday while inspecting the progress of the Umuahia-Aba Section II of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, a key infrastructure project in the South-East.
Key Projects in the South-East
Umahi highlighted that the Tinubu administration has prioritized the South-East in its infrastructure agenda, with significant funding allocated to critical projects. The Umuahia-Aba road project, for instance, is set for completion and inauguration by June 2025, with the remaining 2km of earthwork and 4km of asphalt work nearing completion. Umahi emphasized that the President has provided adequate funding for the project, ensuring its timely delivery.
The minister also noted other ongoing projects in the region, including the Enugu-Abakaliki and Afikpo-Abia-Okigwe roads, which are part of Tinubu’s legacy initiatives. These projects, according to Umahi, demonstrate the administration’s commitment to addressing the infrastructural deficits in the South-East.
Call for Total Support
Umahi urged the people of the South-East to reciprocate the President’s efforts by giving him their full support in the 2027 elections. “The entire South-East must give Mr. President 100% of their votes in the 2027 elections to appreciate him,” he said. He added that he is uniquely positioned to make this appeal, as he has been instrumental in delivering these projects to the region.
The minister also reflected on past political dynamics, stating, “What happened before will not happen again. God was speaking, but a lot of our Christian brothers would not hear.” This statement alludes to the region’s historical voting patterns, which have often favored opposition candidates.
Broader Political Context
Umahi’s remarks come amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections. The South-East, traditionally a stronghold of opposition parties, has seen increased engagement from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) under Tinubu’s leadership. The administration’s focus on infrastructure development in the region is seen as a strategic move to win over voters.
However, some stakeholders have expressed concerns about the feasibility of securing 100% of the region’s votes. Critics argue that while infrastructure projects are commendable, other issues such as security, unemployment, and inclusivity in governance must also be addressed to gain widespread support.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the Tinubu administration’s performance in the South-East will be a key factor in determining its electoral fortunes. With Umahi leading the charge to rally support, the region’s response to these efforts will shape the political landscape in the coming years.
For now, the focus remains on completing ongoing projects and delivering tangible benefits to the people, which Umahi believes will translate into overwhelming electoral support for President Tinubu.
