ABUJA, Nigeria – Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, has called on Nigerians to take charge of their own security, emphasizing that the Army, Police, and DSS cannot protect every community from terrorist attacks and criminal activities. Speaking during a public engagement, Ajayi urged citizens to mobilize and defend themselves against threats, citing successful examples from Bauchi State.
Ajayi highlighted instances where communities like Azare and Tafawa Balewa in Bauchi State repelled Boko Haram insurgents by organizing local defense efforts. In Azare, residents fought off attackers without relying on security forces, killing all invaders and preventing further assaults. Similarly, Tafawa Balewa locals used their knowledge of the terrain to resist attackers and seize their weapons.
"You cannot expect the Nigerian Army, Police, or DSS to protect every Nigerian in every community," Ajayi stated. He stressed that communities must adopt a proactive stance and send a clear message to criminals: "You cannot come here."
Ajayi also called on Nigerian elites to encourage local self-defense measures in their communities. He urged them to engage with residents and seek advice on how best to organize against criminal elements.
The DSS boss's remarks come amid growing concerns over Nigeria's security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and communal violence. While formal security agencies continue to play critical roles in maintaining order, Ajayi's comments underscore the importance of community involvement in safeguarding lives and property.
