Pabradė, Lithuania, April 1, 2025 – The body of the fourth US soldier who went missing during a military training exercise in Lithuania has been recovered, according to both US and Lithuanian officials. This discovery comes a day after the remains of the other three soldiers were found in a peat bog near the Belarus border.
Incident Background
The four soldiers, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, were participating in a tactical training operation on March 25 when their M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicle became submerged in a peat bog at the "General Silvestras Žukauskas" training ground in Pabradė. The vehicle was located on March 26, but extracting it proved challenging due to the dense swamp conditions.
Recovery Efforts
The recovery operation involved hundreds of personnel from the US, Lithuania, Poland, and Estonia, along with extensive equipment such as military helicopters, drones, excavators, and heavy construction machinery. US Navy divers played a crucial role in navigating through thick layers of mud and clay to secure the vehicle for extraction.
Response from Authorities
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda expressed deep condolences to the families of the soldiers and the American people. "Our heartfelt condolences go to our US allies and their people," he stated on X. "Lithuania has been praying for all four missing soldiers, and now, with all our hearts, we stand with their families."
Major General Christopher Norrie, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, described the past week as "heartbreaking" and acknowledged the immense sorrow felt by the families and loved ones of the soldiers.

The US Army is currently investigating the cause of the accident. The incident highlights the risks involved in military training exercises and the importance of international cooperation in such operations.
The names of the soldiers have not been disclosed pending family notification. The incident has sparked a wave of condolences from around the world, with leaders and citizens alike expressing sympathy for the families affected.
