Novak Djokovic, the record 24-time Grand Slam champion, has officially withdrawn from the Italian Open in Rome, scheduled for May 7-18, tournament organizers confirmed on Tuesday. The Serbian star, currently ranked fifth in the world, is focusing on preparing for the French Open, which begins in late May.
Djokovic’s decision follows a series of disappointing results this season, including a second-round loss to Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi at the Madrid Open, marking his fourth consecutive opening-round defeat in 2025. The 37-year-old acknowledged the challenges he faces on the professional circuit this year, stating he is aiming simply to win matches rather than make deep tournament runs.
The Italian Open marks the first time Djokovic will miss the event since his debut in 2007. He is a six-time champion of the Rome Masters and holds numerous ATP Masters 1000 records, including the most wins (414) and titles (40). Despite his recent struggles, Djokovic remains a formidable contender as he prepares for Roland Garros, where he is the reigning champion.
The withdrawal is seen as a strategic move to conserve energy and focus on the clay-court Grand Slam, where Djokovic aims to add to his record tally of major titles.
