Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting at Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, on Monday, April 28, 2025, sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging. He was found guilty of culpable homicide resulting in the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.
Peter Nwachukwu was arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) on behalf of the federal government, facing a 23-count charge including culpable homicide punishable by death, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, spousal battery, and other related offenses.
During the trial, the prosecution called 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, who testified as prosecution witnesses four and five. The prosecution also tendered 25 documents as exhibits. The defendant testified in his defense and called four witnesses, presenting four exhibits.
Before sentencing, Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency, while the prosecution urged the court to enforce the law strictly.
In addition to the death sentence on the primary count of culpable homicide, the court sentenced Nwachukwu to two years imprisonment on several other counts (2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18), six months imprisonment on count 10, three years imprisonment on count 11, and imposed fines of N500,000 and N200,000 on counts 6 and 7 respectively.
The judgment marks a significant moment in the high-profile case that has drawn national attention since Osinachi’s death, which was linked to abuse by her husband.
