Namibia’s First Female President Announces Free University Education Starting 2026

Namibia’s newly inaugurated President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has announced a landmark policy to introduce free university education beginning in 2026, marking a significant step toward expanding access to higher education and empowering the nation’s youth.

Sworn in on March 21, 2025, as Namibia’s first female president, Nandi-Ndaitwah has prioritized tackling youth unemployment and inequality, pledging reforms that include major investments in education, infrastructure, and economic diversification. The new free university education initiative aims to remove financial barriers for Namibian students, enabling more young people to acquire the skills needed for the country’s development.

This bold move aligns with her broader vision to create at least 500,000 jobs over the next five years by investing in sectors such as agriculture, fishing, and creative industries, thereby addressing the high youth unemployment rate, which currently stands near 44%. By making university education free, the government hopes to equip the youth with qualifications that will enhance their employability and contribute to national growth.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s presidency is historic not only for breaking the gender barrier but also for signaling a renewed focus on social equity and inclusive development. Her administration’s commitment to education reform is expected to have a lasting impact on Namibia’s future, fostering a more skilled and competitive workforce.

This announcement places Namibia among a growing number of African nations prioritizing education as a catalyst for economic transformation and social progress under visionary female leadership.
