Veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has expressed his dislike for being referred to as a legend, describing the label as a “scam.” Speaking on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, the 63-year-old actor explained that he does not see himself as a legend and reserves that title for veteran actors like Pete Edochie and Olu Jacobs, whom he regards as true legends and ancestors in the Nigerian film industry.
RMD stated, “I think the legend of a thing is a scam. I have my legends like Uncle Pete and Uncle Olu Jacobs; these are our ancestors and legends.” He further expressed discomfort with the term, saying that being called a legend makes him feel relegated to the neighborhood of retired people or those nearing retirement.
The Delta-born actor, who began his acting career in 1982, emphasized that while he appreciates the respect, he does not subscribe to the “legend” label and prefers to be recognized for his ongoing contributions to Nollywood rather than being seen as a figure of the past.
RMD’s candid remarks highlight his humility and respect for the pioneers of Nigerian cinema, distinguishing himself from the revered status often bestowed on senior actors in the industry.
