Panic as Strange Disease Kills Six Children in Imo Community

A mysterious disease outbreak has claimed the lives of six children aged between one and six years in Mbutu Community, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, sparking widespread panic among residents.

The Executive Chairman of Aboh Mbaise LGA, Barr. Iheukwumere Henry Alaribe, disclosed that the deaths occurred within a week, prompting the immediate closure of all nursery, primary, and secondary schools in the community for seven days to prevent further spread. The local government also suspended the Children’s Day celebration scheduled for May 27 as a precautionary measure.

Health authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Imo State Ministry of Health’s Department of Disease Prevention and Control, are actively investigating the outbreak. An isolation center has been set up at the Mbutu Health Centre to manage suspected cases.

The disease, confirmed by the Imo State Government as diphtheria a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting the throat and respiratory system is vaccine-preventable, and early detection and treatment are effective.

Chairman Alaribe urged parents to vaccinate their children promptly and called on residents to remain calm and cooperate with health officials. He also forwarded detailed information about the victims to the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

The outbreak has caused anxiety in the community, with many parents evacuating their children for safety. Authorities continue efforts to contain the disease and protect the health of residents.
