Oseloka H. Obaze, a prominent ally of Peter Obi-the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections-has officially resigned his membership from the Labour Party (LP). Obaze, who served as Secretary to the Anambra State Government under Obi and was a key strategist in Obi’s presidential campaign, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the LP Chairman in Ochuche Ward 406, Ogbaru Local Government Area, Awka, on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Reasons for Resignation: Protest Against Anambra Governorship Primary
Obaze cited his resignation as a protest against the conduct of the Labour Party’s April 5, 2025, governorship primary election in Anambra State. According to him, the primary was marred by “outright irregularities, bothering on fraud and criminality,” and did not align with the party’s constitution, espoused core values, or democratic principles.
“The processes, conduct and outcome of the Labour Party governorship primaries held on April 5, 2025, in Awka, were fraught with outright irregularities, bothering on fraud and criminality. It was not in tandem with either the party’s Constitution and espoused core values or true tenets of democracy. As such, I hereby disassociate myself henceforth from the Labour Party,” Obaze stated in his resignation letter.
Leadership Crisis and Internal Divisions
Obaze also highlighted the ongoing leadership crisis at the national level within the Labour Party. He pointed to the unresolved rift between the factions led by Julius Abure and Senator Nenadi Usman, which has hindered reconciliation and effective party governance. This internal discord contributed significantly to his decision to sever ties with the party.
Background: From PDP to Labour Party and Role in Obidient Movement
Before joining the Labour Party, Obaze resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022, just a week ahead of Peter Obi’s defection to LP. He quickly became one of Obi’s closest advisers and campaign managers, playing a pivotal role in the 2023 presidential campaign and the formation of the Obidient Movement, which galvanized youth support for Obi’s candidacy.
Next Political Steps Unclear
Obaze has not disclosed his future political plans following his resignation from the Labour Party. His departure adds to growing concerns about the stability of the LP in Anambra State and the broader challenges the party faces nationally.
