Trent Alexander-Arnold has confirmed he will leave Liverpool Football Club at the end of the 2024-25 season, ending a remarkable 20-year association with the club. The 26-year-old England right-back described the decision as “the hardest I’ve ever made in my life” but said it was time for a new challenge beyond his boyhood club.
Alexander-Arnold shared his announcement on social media, explaining that he kept the news private throughout the season to maintain focus on Liverpool’s pursuit of their 20th English top-flight title, which they secured this campaign. “This club has been my whole life - my whole world - for 20 years,” he wrote. “The support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever.”
Having joined Liverpool’s academy at age six, Alexander-Arnold made his senior debut in 2016 and went on to make over 350 appearances. He played a key role in Liverpool’s recent success, including winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cups, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup.
The defender’s departure had been anticipated since March when his agent informed Liverpool’s sporting director that he would not extend his contract. Negotiations stalled despite lucrative offers that would have made him one of the highest-paid full-backs globally. Alexander-Arnold expressed a desire to test himself in a new environment, with Real Madrid widely reported as his next destination, though he has yet to publicly confirm this.
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp expressed regret over the decision but praised Alexander-Arnold’s professionalism and contribution. “You are an integral part of this team; let’s finish this journey together on a high note,” Klopp said.
Alexander-Arnold also thanked Liverpool fans and teammates, promising to give his all until his final day at Anfield. His move marks the end of an era for a player who grew up dreaming of captaining the Reds and leaves behind a legacy as one of the club’s finest talents.
