A sudden and violent storm in Guizhou province, southwestern China, caused four tourist boats to capsize on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of 10 people and injuring dozens more, state media reported on Monday, May 5, 2025.
The incident occurred on the Wu River near Qianxi City, a popular tourist destination known for its scenic mountainous landscapes. Fierce winds, accompanied by a downpour and hail, struck unexpectedly, overturning the vessels and throwing 84 passengers into the river. Seventy of those injured were hospitalized, but none were reported to be in critical condition. Four tourists escaped unharmed.
Initial reports indicated two boats capsized, but authorities later confirmed that four boats were involved. Two of the boats were carrying passengers, while the other two were empty; the crew members of the empty boats managed to swim to safety.
Rescue operations mobilized approximately 500 emergency responders, including police and firefighters, who worked through the night to search for missing persons and assist survivors. One person initially reported missing was found deceased around noon Monday, confirming the death toll at 10.
Eyewitnesses described the conditions as extremely challenging, with deep waters and thick fog hampering rescue efforts. Videos circulated by state media showed rescuers administering CPR to victims and boats floating upside down.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for “all-out efforts” to support rescue operations and provide medical care to the injured. He also emphasized the urgent need to strengthen safety protocols at tourist sites and other public venues following a series of recent accidents across the country.
The tragedy occurred during China’s May Day holiday, a peak travel period when tourist destinations experience heavy crowds. Guizhou’s Wu River is a favored spot for domestic travelers, making the timing particularly devastating.
This accident follows a recent spate of fatal incidents involving passenger vessels, including a deadly collision in Hunan province two months ago that claimed 11 lives.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the storm and the circumstances surrounding the capsizing, while reinforcing safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
