The family of detained Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu has strongly objected to what they describe as deliberate and false representations of his ongoing terrorism trial by certain media outlets. In a statement issued on May 6, 2025, the family emphasized that Kanu has not admitted to inciting violence, contrary to some reports.
During the May 6 hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja, a DSS witness testified about Kanu’s alleged involvement in operating an illegal radio station and inciting attacks on police officers. However, the family clarified that this testimony should not be misconstrued as an admission of guilt by Kanu. They pointed out procedural irregularities, including the prosecution’s failure to properly serve certain documents to the defense, which the presiding judge also highlighted.
The family expressed disappointment over the lack of substantive evidence presented and called for fairness and respect for legal rights throughout the trial process. They urged the judiciary to allow live streaming of the proceedings to enhance transparency and prevent misinformation.
“We humbly appeal to Justice James Omotosho to permit live broadcast of the trial, considering the high level of public interest and the need to counter misinformation,” the statement read. The family also commended the judge for his conduct and called on media organizations to focus on factual reporting rather than sensationalism.
They reiterated that Nnamdi Kanu remains committed to the peaceful pursuit of justice and appealed to the public to support efforts toward a fair trial and transparent judicial process.
