2027: Former Minister Dalung Says Tinubu Lacks Understanding, Endorsements Are Political Caricature

Former Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s performance, saying Nigerians are enduring severe hunger, insecurity, and economic hardship because Tinubu lacks a proper understanding of Nigeria’s realities since assuming office in May 2023. Dalung attributed the country’s difficulties largely to Tinubu’s twin policies of fuel subsidy removal and naira floatation, implemented without adequate measures to mitigate their fallout.

Dalung described Tinubu’s administration as “far below expectations,” noting that despite being seen as a “miracle maker” from his Lagos governorship days, the President dashed Nigerians’ hopes from the outset by removing fuel subsidies recklessly and without sufficient government structures in place to manage the consequences. He called this move “cowardice” rather than courage, criticizing the lack of consultation and preparation.

Regarding the numerous endorsements of Tinubu’s 2027 reelection bid, Dalung dismissed them as a “political caricature,” arguing that defections and endorsements from politicians are not reflective of popular support but rather a “conclave of sinners” seeking forgiveness by joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that the votes Tinubu received were from Nigerians, not just APC members, and that these endorsements add no real value.

Dalung also addressed recent high-profile defections to the APC, such as those by governors in Delta and Akwa Ibom states, asserting these moves are not people-driven and do not indicate broad public support. He warned that despite any political maneuvering, Tinubu has drawn a battle line against the poor masses by “weaponizing hunger, poverty, and hardship,” and that no amount of political endorsements will save him in 2027.

On the opposition coalition forming ahead of 2027, Dalung described it as unique and popular among the poor, who are suffering under the current administration. He suggested that this coalition could pose a serious challenge to Tinubu’s reelection, reflecting widespread public anger and desire for change.

Dalung’s comments provide a stark critique of Tinubu’s presidency and the political dynamics leading up to the 2027 elections, highlighting deep dissatisfaction with governance and economic policies.
