BREAKING: Ghana Slashes Data Costs by Up to 15%, MTN and Airtel Plans Offer Massive Value Boost

Ghana’s Ministry of Communications has announced a sweeping reduction in data costs by up to 15%, a move aimed at making internet access more affordable for millions of Ghanaians. Effective immediately, major telecom operators are rolling out significantly enhanced data bundles at no extra cost to consumers.

Under the new structure, MTN’s popular 92GB plan will now offer 214GB for the same price, while Airtel’s 92GB package jumps to an impressive 256GB. These changes represent some of the largest single-plan data increases in Ghana’s history, directly addressing long-standing concerns about high data prices and limited access to digital services.

Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, who has been in office for only four months, emphasized that this is just the beginning. The government aims to achieve a total data cost reduction of around 50% by the fourth quarter of 2025. George noted that the reforms are part of a broader digital inclusion strategy, which also includes a $150 million investment by telecoms to improve network quality and coverage.

The Ministry is also working on a new tariff framework and tax rationalization measures to further drive down data prices in the coming months. The National Communications Authority will conduct nationwide quality and billing integrity assessments to ensure consumers benefit from both lower costs and improved service.

The announcement has been widely welcomed by digital entrepreneurs, students, and ordinary Ghanaians, who have long cited high data costs as a barrier to education, business, and civic participation especially in underserved and rural areas.

With these bold reforms, Ghana is positioning itself as a regional leader in digital affordability and access, setting a new standard for telecom policy across West Africa.
