Kebbi Government Proposes Death Penalty for Bandit Informants Amid Renewed Attacks

Kebbi State Government has announced plans to review existing laws to impose the death penalty or life imprisonment on individuals convicted of aiding bandits by providing them with information. This decision follows a series of deadly attacks by armed bandits in parts of the state, including recent assaults on Tadurga village in Zuru and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Areas, which claimed 30 lives.

Governor Nasiru Idris made the announcement during condolence visits to the affected communities on Tuesday, describing informants as “deadly to society” and reaffirming his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on insecurity. He emphasized that the government will treat the issue with utmost seriousness and will not tolerate those who facilitate banditry.

To bolster security, Governor Idris revealed that arrangements have been completed to establish a military operational base in the Zuru Emirate. Additionally, Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other essential security equipment have been deployed from Abuja to strengthen the state’s defense capabilities.

The governor also called on the public to avoid politicizing security matters or spreading unverified information on social media, warning that such actions could undermine ongoing efforts to restore peace.

Local traditional leaders, including the Chief of Danko, Ibrahim Al’aji, the Chief of Dabai, Suleiman Sami, and the Emir of Zuru, Retired Major General Sani Sami, expressed appreciation for the governor’s swift intervention and commitment to enhancing security in the region.

Governor Idris further vowed to personally sign the death warrant of anyone convicted of volunteering information to bandits that leads to the killing of innocent people, underscoring the administration’s resolve to eradicate the menace of banditry in Kebbi State.

The government’s firm stance and security reinforcements aim to restore safety and stability to communities ravaged by bandit attacks in the state.
