The Lagos State Government has announced the immediate suspension of all planning approvals along the route of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road. The decision, disclosed by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, aims to address the impact of the coastal highway project on existing and ongoing physical development plans within the state.
Dr. Olumide explained that the suspension was necessary due to the significant effects the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road has had on the recently concluded Ode-Omi Action Area Plan, as well as the ongoing Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan and the Lekki Comprehensive Master Plan, which are at various stages of preparation. He emphasized the need to review and realign the situation on the ground with these development frameworks to prevent further distortions now or in the future.
In line with this directive, the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) has been mandated to enforce the suspension until further notice. The commissioner reassured that the state government remains committed to fostering an organized, livable, inclusive, and sustainable built environment. He also expressed confidence that Lagos is well-positioned to reap the benefits of the inter-state coastal highway once planning considerations are properly aligned.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road is a major infrastructure project designed to enhance connectivity along Nigeria’s coastline, with the Lagos segment linking key economic hubs such as the Lekki Deep Seaport and the Dangote Industrial Corridor. The suspension of planning approvals is a precautionary measure to ensure that the highway integrates seamlessly with Lagos State’s broader urban development goals.
