NUJ Honors Yahaya Bello with Lifetime Achievement Award for Media Empowerment Amid Corruption Case by the EFCC

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has conferred a Lifetime Achievement Award on former Kogi State Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello in recognition of his notable contributions to media empowerment. The award was presented during the NUJ’s 70th anniversary and book presentation held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on June 21, 2025.

Senator Smart Adeyemi, a former NUJ President and representative of Kogi West Senatorial District, received the prestigious award on behalf of Bello. The award acknowledged Bello’s outstanding efforts in improving the welfare of journalists, particularly in Kogi State, during his tenure. Central to this recognition was Bello’s establishment of the GYB Annual Workshop for Correspondents and Editors, a yearly event that has trained and encouraged over 200 media professionals per edition across Nigeria. The workshops focus on developmental journalism and enhancing writing skills, with seasoned media chiefs and journalism professors serving as jurors in essay competitions that offer cash and other prizes.

NUJ President Alhassan Yahya, who signed Bello’s nomination letter alongside his Deputy, Mrs. Abimbola Oyetunde, emphasized the former governor’s immense contributions to journalism through these initiatives. Speaking through Senator Adeyemi, Bello expressed gratitude for the recognition and pledged continued support for journalists’ welfare.

The award ceremony was attended by dignitaries from various sectors, including Minister of Information and National Orientation Alhaji Mohammed Idris, former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, former Minister of Youth and Sport Mr. Sunday Dare, and governors or their deputies from several states.

Despite the accolade, Bello’s recognition has drawn attention amid ongoing corruption allegations against him, a fact that has sparked debate within journalistic and public circles. Nevertheless, the NUJ maintained its focus on his contributions to media empowerment as the basis for the award.

In his remarks, Bello also praised the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, asserting that Kogi State under Governor Usman Ododo would deliver a 100 percent presidential victory for Tinubu in the 2027 elections, stating there was no space for opposition in the state.

The Lifetime Achievement Award highlights the complex legacy of Yahaya Bello, balancing his controversial political profile with his tangible impact on journalism development in Nigeria.
